Mr. Dattatreya Hosabale is a Joint General Secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the largest voluntary organization in India. The philosophy of the RSS has inspired a great number of its members to develop organizations and initiatives, focused on nation-building and developing social cohesion. Many Indian political leaders including the current Prime Minister, Ministers, President, Vice President and many Chief Ministers of India owe their inspiration to the RSS. A holder of a Master’s degree in English literature, Mr. Hosabale was a student leader for more than two decades with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), India’s largest students’ organization. He was the National Organizing Secretary of ABVP for many years. He actively participated in the “J. P. movement” of 1974 and then in the struggle for restoring democracy and civil liberties in India during 1975-1977. He is a founding trustee of India Policy Foundation, founder of the Youth Development Center in Assam and of the World Organization of Students and Youth. Mr. Hosabale was also the founding editor of a Kannada language magazine, Aseema.  An avid reader and an eloquent speaker, he is proficient in Kannada, Hindi, English, Tamil, and Sanskrit. Mr. Hosabale has traveled widely in Europe and the Americas to speak at conferences and at other events.

Prof. Walter Andersen serves as Senior Adjunct Professor of South Asia Studies. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins SAIS, Dr. Andersen served as chief of the US State Department’s South Asia Division in the Office of Analysis for the Near East and South Asia. He held other key positions within the State Department, including Special Assistant to the Ambassador at the US Embassy in New Delhi and member of the Policy Planning Staff in Washington, DC. Dr. Andersen’s current research involves Hindu nationalism and India’s assertive foreign policy in the Indian Ocean and its littoral.
