FIIDS Expresses Sympathy to Earthquake Victims and Concern About Lack of Preparedness of Taliban to Handle Disaster Recovery in Afghanistan
Washington DC, October 12, 2023 – The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) today expressed sadness about deadly earthquakes killing over thousand in Afghanistan and concern about the lack of preparedness of the Taliban to handle the aftermath of the two devastating earthquakes that struck Afghanistan in October, 2023.
Two earthquakes, around magnitude of 6.-6.3, hitting four days apart killed over 1,000 people and injured thousands more. It also caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure in Herat province (western) of Afghanistan.
FIIDS criticized Taliban for its slow and inadequate response to the disaster. The group has limited resources and expertise, and it has been slow to coordinate with international aid organizations.
