Details: We are having this panel of esteemed scholars on Afghan region after few months take over of Afghanistan by Taliban. As US and NATO allies are completely out of the region, the attempts of Taliban government to get recognition has failed. Pakistan and China are taking advantage of the situation. Taliban are putting religious and other restrictions on people in general but on women and press in specific. Taliban is trying to fulfill its radicalization goals. Its growth would be influencing religious extremism in the world. This panel will review the situation and discuss security implications on the world in general but in South Asia – India in specific.
Hashim Wahdatyar is Adviser and Research Fellow at the Afghan Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ACSSR) . He is having served as at one of the prominent Think Tank at Washington DC, the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) since November 2016. Prior to that, he served as Spokesperson and Program Officer of United Nations (UNODC) Regional Program for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries for almost one decade.Mr. Wahdatyar is a known analyst on foreign policy, counter terrorism and counter narcotics. He is the author of several articles published in the well known journals and is a frequent commentator in print, on radio, and on television. His opinion and pieces have appeared in the Diplomat, Washington Post, Voice of America, Aljazeera, BBC and other major publications.Dr. Shalini Chawla a is a Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS), New Delhi. She is a well known defense analyst, expert on Afghanistan and Pakistan, and an author of five books. She was a research scholar at IDSA, 1999-2002. She worked as a freelance defence analyst from 2003-2005 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She joined CAPS in 2006 and focus of her studies is Pakistan and Afghanistan. She has authored five books Currently, she is the Project Director for the CAPS project – “Pakistan and Afghanistan: Present and Future”.Dr Shalini Chawla received a Commendation and Badge by the Chief of Air Staff in October 2020 for displaying great dedication and professional ability, resulting in praiseworthy contribution to the service.

Details: We are having this panel of esteemed scholars on Afghan region on occasion of six month take over of Afghanistan by Taliban. Afghanistan today not only has human rights crisis but it has now facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. It lacks freedom of Media, speech, and assembly. Taliban government imposed restrictions on women’s and girl’s rights. As US and NATO allies are completely out of the region, the attempts of Taliban government to get recognition has failed. Pakistan and China are in dialogue with Talibans and are keen to get the economic sanctions on Afghanistan. Though India has provided medical, food and other humanitarian aid, it has been working countries from Central Asia to pressure Taliban to initiative inclusive process and avoiding radicalization.
Introductions of Panelists:
Ambassador Javid Ahmad is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center. He was formerly Afghanistan’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. Previously, he was a nonresident fellow with the Modern War Institute at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Prior to that, he worked on South Asia for the Pentagon’s Afghanistan-Pakistan Hands and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He also worked as a program coordinator for Asia for the German Marshall Fund in Washington, a Washington-based think tank, and the NATO headquarters in Brussels. He has also worked on governance issues for organizations in Kabul. Ahmad’s writing has appeared, inter alia, in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, The New York Times, Foreign Policy, The National Interest, The Hill, and CNN. He has a BA in international relations from Beloit College and an MA in security studies from Yale University.
Alok Bansal is the Executive Director of India Foundation, New Delhi and South Asian Institute for Strategic Affairs (SAISA). He has been the Executive Director of the National Maritime Foundation (NMF) and has worked with the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) and Center for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) earlier. He has authored a book titled “Balochistan in Turmoil:Pakistan at Cross Roads’; in 2009 and has co-edited several other books. He writes extensively for many Indian, Pakistani and international newspapers and websites. He has represented the Indian side in Indo-Afghanistan, IndoPakistan, Indo-Australian and Indo-Malaysian strategic dialogues. He has participated in the Indian Peacekeeping Operations in Sri Lanka. He has commanded two warships and has been a Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington for three years.
